Safe Driving Rules :

1. Do Not Park/ Stop at the exit of a turn/ intersection :

The exit of turn or intersection is usually blind spot for the oncoming traffic. Parking or being stranded at such a spot is extremely hazardous and can lead to an unavoidable accident. In case of a breakdown is such a position on a turn/intersection, it is recommended to have a person stand at the entry of the/ intersection to warn the traffic until the breakdown scenario is resolved.

2. Keep 'em Visible :

One of the primary causes of accidents at night is a lack of visibility for the riders/ drivers around you. There can be various factors for the like the oncoming/tailgating vehicle's lights not functioning, a lack of proper street lighting, a blind intersection, etc. It is hence recommended that you keep your bike's reflectors (side, tail and tail lighs/ turn blinkers clean so that it ensures optimum visibility for you and your motorcycle with respect to the traffic elements around you. Reflective patches on the riding gear further enhances this factor.

3. Maintain Lanes According To Sped, Not Will :

Make sure that the lane you are riding in is justified by your speed, moving slow in the right most (fast) lane is not only dangerous for you, but will also cause inconvenience to the faster moving traffic, Similarly, moving fast in the slow lane is hazardous to the relatively slower traffic elements in these lanes The lane system in India is most commonly divided as:

Right Lane - 60-80 km/h, Middle lane - 40-60 km/h, Left lane - Below 40 km/h.

4. Manoeuvering on an Intersection:

When you approach an intersection and wish to turn left. It is very simple. First make sure you are in the left most lane. Upon approaching the intersection, look out for oncoming traffic, give the appropriate turn signal and turn left. While making a right turn though, things get tricky. You have to be in the right most lane to avoid inconvenience to the traffic behind you. As you approach the intersection. If there is no roundabout, it is a good idea to imagine a virtual roundabout in the centre of the intersection. Watch out for oncoming traffic and then proceed to the centre, turning around the imaginary roundabout to complete the maneuver. The illegal and hazardous manner of approaching the intersection turning right and diagonally changing lanes is not recommended at all.

5. Do not listen to music while riding :

Similar to mobile phones, listening to music while riding can lead to a lack of concentration. It further adds to the nuisance, as the rider can't hear important things like an overtaking vehicles honk or any unexpected noise originating from any malfunctioning element on the bike. It is better to enjoy music indoors or while exercising certainly not while riding.

6. Road signs a difference:

Road signs are put up for your safety. The signs will not only indicate various turns, rules and scenarios but will also help you plan a maneuver better. It is also mandatory to obey signs which prohibit honking, overtaking and excess speeds in order to contribute towards social responsibility and traffic safety.

7. Luggage and Pillions have their own space:

Make sure that you ride with only one pillion and that the pillion is seated on the pillion seat only and not on unconventional areas like the tank or the foot board of a scooter as these can seriously hamper the vehicle dynamics. In some cases, the rider's vision too is hindered thus proving to be a perfect recipe for an accident. Similarly, luggage too needs to be carried only in the form of a tank bag, back pack or saddle bags not hanging from the handlebars or your shoulders.

8. Obey lane dividers lines:

The two yellow lines in the middle of the road act as a divider for the going and oncoming traffic. These lines are also used as a reference by riders/drivers to avoid straying into the oncoming traffic's lane. These lines therefore should not be used like a small overtaking lane. It is recommended that you make a conventional overtaking maneuver by flashing the light a couple of times to the vehicle in front of you.
